WHO raises pandemic alert level to 6 2009-06-11
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the pandemic alert level to “Phase 6”. According to the WHO website, Phase 6 indicates that a pandemic is underway, with sustained human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two WHO regions. “Increasing the phase level to 6 doesn’t mean that the infection has become more severe; it just means that it is becoming more widespread,” states Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. “In fact, the good news is that most cases we are seeing so far have been mild.” For more information about the Phase 6 pandemic alert level, visit the WHO’s website.
