School Immunization Coverage Rates in the EOHU Region

In Ontario, the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requires children who attend elementary and secondary school to be vaccinated or have a valid exemption provided to their local public health unit. As a result, each year Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) staff work with schools located in the EOHU catchment area to review student immunization records to ensure that all students are a) up to date with their required immunization and/or b) a valid exemption for philosophical or medical reasons is provided, in accordance with the ISPA.

The report below indicates school-specific immunization coverages for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations for students in the EOHU region aged 7 to 17 during the 2018/19 school year. It also includes exemption rates for philosophical or religious reasons.

The 2018/19 school year had an overall coverage rate for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine of 92.6%, and a 95.1% coverage rate for measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

Methodology

This data was extracted from the provincial reporting tool in August 2019, for the 2018/2019 school year.
This data includes students born between 2001 and 2011.
This data reports on whether students had completed coverage for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations for their age for the 2018/19 school year.

Immunization exemptions are granted for different reasons, including philosophical or religious, medical, or administrative exemptions.

* The exemption rates presented here include philosophical or religious exemptions only, so the exemption rate and coverage rates do not add up to 100 percent.

Schools that are not part of a publicly funded school board, and schools that have 10 or fewer students, are excluded from this analysis. Intermediate schools and secondary schools that share a building have been analyzed as one school.
