Birth to Six Months
Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding
Breastmilk/human milk is the only food or drink your baby needs for the first 6 months. Babies who are breastfed/chestfed should get a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU (10µg) each day to prevent deficiency.
If you are experiencing breastfeeding/chestfeeding challenges, you can get help. Visit the Breastfeeding section of our website for more information on breastfeeding/chestfeeding positions, latching, and storage of breastmilk/human milk.
Infant formula
If your baby is not breastfed/chestfed, or is only partially breastfed/chestfed, commercial infant formulas are an alternative to breastmilk/human milk. Non-breastfed/chestfed infants do not require a vitamin D supplement because the infant formula contains vitamin D.
Always follow your baby’s hunger and fullness cues to know when and how much to offer.
Visit the Bottle Feeding section of our website for more information on infant formula preparation, sterilization of equipment and tips to feed your baby.
